ELDERFLORA

JOIN US OCT. 5th AT THE FEATHER RIVER LAND TRUSTS’ NEW NATURE CENTER!

Elderflora is the story of the life of a tree. Told from the perspective of he tree itself, Elderflora (“old trees”) relates its journey from birth by fire to death by lightning.

Connery’s work is inspired by the Native American belief that land is kin. Elderflora is dedicated to the urgent message of Chief Oren Lyons: "Time is running out: Our survival depends on immediate action against climate change." Lyons is a Haudenosaunee Faithkeeper of the Wolf Clan of the Onondaga Nation and the Seneca Nation of the Six Nations of the Grand River.

Elderflora is a 60-minute song-cycle designed to seamlessly restart at the one-hour mark, mirroring the life cycle.--

Written by composer and vocalist Majel Connery, the music for Elderflora pairs the rich, earthy tones of cello (played by Felix Fan) with Connery’s own vocal electronic manipulations to evoke a portrait of nature both deeply familiar and utterly out of this world.

Duo Violão + One

Join us for an evening of Rogério Souza, Edinho Gerber, & Ami Molinelli with special guest Loyalton Middle School’s 7th grade Samba Band, led by Mr. McIntosh.

This trio will spend three days in at Loyalton High School in a hands-on workshop with the Middle/high school music electives. Additionally, the 7th grade samba band will get an opportunity to perform with Duo Violão + One in an assembly for the school as well as the public performance.

The Sierra Schools Foundation possibly supports this immersive residency.

Duo Violão + One started with two Rio de Janeiro-based guitarists, Rogério Souza and Edinho Gerber, and the desire to explore and expand the musical possibilities of playing two violões, or Brazilian guitars. During their first visit to the Bay Area in 2015, they met percussionist Ami Molinelli, and the musical connection was immediate.

The ensemble navigates 20th-century Brazilian popular music, emphasizing Brazil’s first original musical genre, choro while showcasing original works and inventive arrangements. The group’s first album, “A História de Choro,” was released in 2019 and featured as one of the best musical albums of the Bay Area by the San Jose Mercury News.

Chanticleer: Music in a Silent World

Music in the Barn

Join us for a spectacular night of enchanting music with Grammy Award-winning choir Chanticleer. Performing in one of the Sierra Valley's oldest barns and most beautiful barns, Diamond S Ranch, will offer up the perfect venue for these angelic voices.

Music of a silent world, Chanticleer sings the songs of the natural world and gives a voice to the otherwise voiceless rocks and stones and trees and rivers that share our planet with us.

Co-commissioned with Chanticleer, their program centers around a new arrangement of Majel Connerys The Rivers are our Brothers. "The goal, she says, is to give nature a voice. I wanted to allow these vibrant things to speak on their own behalf." While inhabiting those voices, the program also explores what the world might be like without them. Repertoire includes music by William Byrd, Heinrich Isaac, and Max Reger, new arrangements of Wildflowers by Tom Petty and The Weather by Lawrence, and a new commission from Chanticleers's composer in residence, Ayanna Woods.

Chanticleer @ The Nevada Museum of Art

Chanticleer: Music of a Silent World

In a special performance at The Nevada Museum of Art

In Music of a Silent World, internationally recognized Chanticleer sings the songs of the natural world. Each movement represents a different part of the Sierra Nevada’s natural beauty, from its mountains to its forests, rocks, rivers, and snowbanks. This program centers around a new arrangement of Majel Connery’s, The Rivers are our Brothers, co-commissioned by Chanticleer and Musica Sierra. The work was first performed in the Sierra Valley as part of Musica Sierra’s Musical Headwaters program in 2021. In the spirit of educational collaboration, local school groups participate in the performance of The Rivers are our Brothers. This particular performance will feature University of Nevada, Reno’s Chamber Chorale.

Chanticleer, a multiple Grammy award-winning vocal ensemble, has been presented by some of the largest musical organizations in the country, including the Chicago Symphony and the LA Philharmonic. Founded in San Francisco in 1978 by singer and musicologist Louis Botto, Chanticleer has sold over one million recordings and performed thousands of live concerts to audiences around the world. Chanticleer’s repertoire is rooted in the renaissance and has continued to expand to include a wide range of classical, gospel, jazz, and popular music.

*Doors open at 6 pm with cash bar

This program is presented as part of UPSTAGE: A Literary and Performing Art Series supported by the Nightingale Family Foundation and the Williams Foundation
